Best Janitorial Staffing Practices: Zone vs. Team Cleaning
There are basically two primary cleaning approaches when it comes to janitorial services: traditional Zone Cleaning, and the newer industry standard Team Cleaning.
As the Kalamazoo area’s leading industrial janitorial staffing company, we know the ins and outs of both cleaning methods. In this article we share with you the features and benefits of each cleaning method.
Janitorial Staffing Zone Cleaning
Janitorial Zone Cleaning was, for over a century, the standard cleaning procedure. In janitorial zone cleaning a building is divided into zones – for example, a group of rooms or sometimes an entire floor – and there is one cleaner assigned to a zone.
The one janitorial staff member is then responsible for all aspects of cleaning the zone – from mopping, to dusting, and even to cleaning the restrooms and waste bins.
This cleaning style is now considered outdated and inefficient for a number of reasons. To begin with, it results in a lot of duplicated equipment, since each employee must have their own mop, a broom, rags, a vacuum, bathroom cleaning brushes, etc.
And, it leads to a less efficient use of the janitorial staff’s time, because they are constantly having to switch from the mop, to the vacuum, to the cleaning rags, etc.
Additionally, zone cleaning leads to inconsistent results, as each janitorial staffer may perform duties somewhat differently – or may have better or worse equipment than a cleaner in a different zone.
Janitorial Staffing Team Cleaning
In janitorial team cleaning, cleaning tasks are by duties, not by zones. So each team member specializes in one cleaning task. For example, there may be one vacuum specialist, one restroom specialist, one dusting person, etc.
This specialization of members of a janitorial is much more efficient, and also offers more consistent results.
Even better, it reduces equipment costs, because not everyone needs their own vacuum, mop, etc. And it substantially reduces training time and costs – since each janitorial staff member only has to be trained on one or two specific duties.
It also enables janitorial team members to get very fast and very good at one specific task, very quickly. Floor specialist, for example, get to know which cleaning products work best on which floor surfaces, and how to best dilute, mix and apply them.
